SCHOLARSHIPS
TBD - UNDER RECONSTRUCTION
Updated 3/21/2022 - Links are NOT active
Two of the most rewarding projects that our organization sponsors are our two scholarship opportunities, i.e. the H. T. Lorick, Jr. Vocal Scholarship and the Sylvia E. Looney Piano Scholarship. Both of these scholarships are designed to assist local student musicians in their professional training for upcoming college scholarship auditions. This endeavor is invaluable to us an arts organization because we are helping perpetuate the musical arts in our own community, as well as, membership for our own choral ensemble. Thanks to the gracious donations from you, we are able to grant monetary awards and performance opportunities to the most outstanding student musicians in our municipality.

As LCCS moves into its second decade of successful service to our community, the Planning Committee (the governing board) is currently conducting an in-house audit of organizational effectiveness and viability for the sole purpose of sustaining LCCS’s solid governmental and financial foundation in order to help guarantee continued success for many years to come. From this self-evaluation the Finance Committee has realized that our scholarship funds have been generously supported over the last several years, and thus, have reached a point where both are fully-funded for several years to come. In response the Committee discovered that we may be better served to receive all future donations in the General Fund, but also designate a “maintenance” amount of 10% of the General Fund each year for the sole purpose of the perpetuation of our two scholarships. It is very important to note that by changing our donation process in this way, both scholarship programs can continue to flourish indefinitely. LCCS will continue as it has in the past to absorb all costs for administering the scholarships, i.e. payment of advertising, mailings, printing, and adjudication. The only funds deducted from the scholarship funds will actually be the scholarship award money gifted to the scholarship recipients. As a result of the aforementioned discussions the LCCS Planning Committee and Financial Committee have unanimously approved the following policy:
Effective July 1, 2016, all donations will be considered General Fund Donations. Ten percent (10%) of your General Fund Donation will be allocated to our two scholarship funds, H. T. Lorick Jr. Scholarship(voice) and Sylvia Looney Scholarship (piano), distributed equally between the two. Every donation to the Lexington County Choral Society will help insure the future of these scholarships. General Fund Donations exclude grants, sponsorships, and fundraisers ie: Golf Tournament fees and hole sponsorships, and purchase of raffle tickets.

Sylvia E. Looney Piano Scholarship
For six seasons Sylvia Elkins Looney mesmerized audiences with her accompanying expertise for Lexington County Choral Society performances. In addition to her work for LCCS, Sylvia had an active performance career as pianist and organist for over forty years around the state, but primarily for her home town, Lexington. She graduated from Newberry College and received scholarship offers to attend New York’s renowned Julliard School of Music. She was organist at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Lexington, SC, a position that she held for over thirty-five years. To honor her dedicated service and exceptional performance as premier accompanist, the Sylvia E. Looney Piano Scholarship was founded by the organization's membership in 2003. It was specifically designed to help encourage aspiring young pianists and accompanists around the Midlands of South Carolina.
